My friends, in today's first reading, James 3:1-10, the author talks about, of all things, our tongues! With them we can say "Praised be the Lord and Father," and the next minute, with that same tongue, we can be tearing someone to pieces. How important it is to bridle the tongue.
Richard, O.P.
My friends, in today's first reading, James 2:14-24,26, the writer asks, "What good is it to profess faith without practicing it?" The practice grounds for us are everywhere, all the time. We can alway be kind, honest, and proactive in doing good.

St. Isidore. Patron of Farmers. Friends, the earth that the farmer plows and grows things from is Holy Ground." God's skin, if you like.
Richard, O.P.
Friends, today we celebrate the name of my good friend and the former director the the St. Jude Shrine, Fr. Matthias Walsh. The first Matthias was called to witness to the resurrection of Jesus. Fr. Matt, by his joy and willingness to serve, has likewise witnessed to the Resurrection of Jesus. May all of us be like the two of them. p.s. Fr. Matt celebrates his 50th anniversary of priesthood at the Shrine Masses Thursday, May 29.
Richard, O.P.
Friends, when we stop kowtowing to our egos and flow with the Spirit the whole human race evolves more and more into the image and likeness of God.
Richard, O.P.
Submit to the Holy Spirit and it will only lead you to goodness.
Richard, O.P.
Feast of Pentecost. Friends, we often reflect on how close we are to Jesus when we eat his body and drink his blood at Mass. Let's not forget that we are equally close to Jesus everywhere because he has given us his very own Spirit which unites with ours and impels us to do good.
Richard, O.P.
Friends, another way to have good relations with others is to keenly appreciate their boundaries. After the resurrection, Peter started minding John's business. "But Lord, what about him?" Jesus answered, "How does that concern you? Your business is to follow me." People who are intimate are also quick to honor each other's space.
Richard, O.P.
If I am about having "my Way" all the time I will never have deep, satisfying relationships. With God I must always say, "your way." With friends and people I am related to it is also important to frequently say, "OK, your way." The world won't collapse.
Richard, O.P.
In today's Gospel, John 17: 20-26, Jesus prays, "that all may be one as you, Father, are in me, and I am in you." Friends, each one of us has been given our life span to contribute to making this prayer of Jesus come true.
Richard, O.P.
Friends, with less mumbling going on in our heads we would discover a wonderful spaciousness within which we would apprehend more fully our own presence, the presence of God, and the presence of others.
Richard, O.P.
Friends, I was really surprised once when I read that most of the thoughts we have we have entertained a couple of hundred times before. I checked it out for myself and found it to be true. How dull! I think it would be better to have fewer thoughts but perhaps some new ones. The rest of the time we could just enjoy the peace and quiet.
Richard, O.P.
Friends, how can we be in communication with God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? Probably by talking less to ourselves. How much of that we all do! We need to make a little quiet in our heads and then sense the presence of God that is always with us.
Richard, O.P.
In today's Gospel for the Seventh Sunday of Easter, John 17: 1-11. we are taught: "Eternal life is this: to know you, the only true God, and him whom you have sent, Jesus Christ." Notice that scriptures do not say eternal life is to know "about" Jesus and God. We are to really know them. To have an intimate relationship with them.
Richard, O.P.
Friends, today we remember the apostles Philip and James. They followed Jesus. Whatever our labor, it must be a way of following Jesus. If our occupation in not in harmony with the way of Jesus we must honestly examine whether this is work we ought to continue doing. |
